35.7 Paul Hindemith, The Craft of Musical Composition, ed. Arthur Mendel and Otto Ortmann (New York: Associated Music, 1945), foldout.

35.8 J. Kent Williams, Theories and Analyses of Twentieth-Century Music (Fort Worth: Harcourt Brace, 1997), 230.

35.9 Robert Morris, Composition with Pitch-Classes: A Theory of Compositional Design (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1987), 83.

Just because something appears in prose rather than pseudocode does not necessarily mean it is easier to understand, however. The prime-form procedure in figure 35.10 contains the same information as figure 35.9, minus “and IP” in step 3 because figure 35.10 does not consider inversionally related sets to be equivalent. While the layout feels more user-friendly, the procedure described has exactly the same steps (find the most compact rotation of pitches, deal with ties, and transpose the final set to start on zero), and these discrete steps are linked together within a paragraph. Carrying out each step requires rescanning the paragraph to find where the last one ended and the next begins. However, the sample problem in the second column enhances the image’s pedagogy.
